Hiking
by Michelle Finch on June 14, 2008

I have a bit of a quandary, and hopefully some out there in the blogosphere can help me out. I'm looking to take a hiking vacation in the fall, likely in mid to late September. I was particularly sold on Utah, specifically MOAB, but as I look around a little more, I see some truly amazing hiking and camping spots in Colorado. Then my inner traveler points out that since I live close to the Rocky Mountains, perhaps I should spread my wings a little and try hiking elsewhere.... Virginia perhaps? New England?
If you could hike anywhere in the US or Canada, where would you go, and why. Plus, let's assume money is a bit of an issue, so maybe no spendy hiking trips to Hawaii (though I have hiked there and it was amazing).
Suggestions?

BestHike.com will have all the answers you'll need. And then some. ;)
I'd suggest Yosemite (crowds will begin to thin in Sept) or maybe head up to the Pacific Northwest and go to Olympic. For something completely out off the beaten path, and for solitude, go to Big Bend, but it may be still quite hot in Sept. there.

If you like some winter hike, it is great to hike in Alaska. I've tried last winter and it was really amazing. But before you have to get all the facts about the place you'll go and the conditions there. It is an extreme hiking!!!

I know K2 is outside of the US, but to all the hikers out there this is an interesting post I came across at Peterman's Eye. It talks about hiking K2 and sacrifices that have to be made when hiking the most dangerous climb in the world!

If you love hiking trails with beautiful hills I suggest hiking the Allegheny national forest in PA. I've been there year after year for the past 9 years and usually hike hemlock trail. Good times, good views, and a great reservoir to swim in the summer.

But the White Mountains in NH are awesome. Try the Appalachian Mt Club's website for details. Include the ridgeline going over Mt. Washington for great view and a great workout.
