Hiking and you

Hiking may not be for everyone and therefore one needs to access the pros and cons before going out on a hiking expedition. As a hiker, before going out on a hiking expedition you need to be aware of your capabilities and limitations. One needs to be physically and mentally fit as hiking is demanding in itself and becomes tougher when you are carrying heavy gear. If you are new to hiking start off by indulging in hikes of one to three miles on regular intervals under non challenging conditions. Begin slowly and then progress as you gain experience. For longer hikes you will obviously need a backpack which needs to be stocked with the necessary items.

The most important item which should be in your backpack is water. On any given day during hiking you will end up consuming three to four liters of water. In case of hot or humid climate you will require twice the amount. Besides water your backpack should also comprise of food items such as candy, fruits and nuts which are needed for energy bursts and stabilizing protein. For every day of hiking you will need at least an average of 1.5 to 2 pounds of food to fulfill your daily energy needs. You must also carry maps of the hiking area, compasses, rain gear, fire starters, whistles, tourniquet bandages and first aid kits in your backpack.

In case hiking is for more than 24 hours it is advisable to carry along sleeping bag or tent so that you can rest wherever required. Last but not the least, as per American Hiking Society there are more than fifteen common dangers of trail so you must take precautions and be prepared to deal with it.
