Outdoor News Update: Endangered Destinations & World Cup Skiing

Here's the best of the outdoor news I missed.
The Travel Channel has put together an interesting list of destinations that are in danger of losing their allure to the independent or adventurous traveler in the near future thanks to increasing globalism, tourist traffic, modernization, and more. They urge you to get to these places now, before the character and charm are gone forever.
Don't Ask, Don't Tell (Keep Secret Spots Secret)
This may sound selfish, but trust me: Exclusivity can feel downright sweet in practice. As much as I want to, I don't even feel guilty about it. The way I see it, if you've done the legwork to find a secret spot-a fishing hole, backcountry powder stash, climbing crag, or surf break-you owe it to yourself and the explorers who may follow to shut the hell up.
Ligety Storms to 2nd Place in Opener
Olympic champion Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) opened the 2008 Audi FIS World Cup season in blazing fashion Sunday, finishing second in a giant slalom over a wind-swept course on the Rettenbach Glacier. Bode Miller (Bretton Woods, NH) was fifth and Dane Spencer (Boise, ID) returned to the World Cup 20 months after breaking his neck and pelvis in a racing crash. WCSN.com has the race available for on-demand viewing.
