Here's the best of the outdoor news I missed.
USGS Offering Topo Maps Online
The USGS has launched the new USGS Map Locator and Downloader, a Web tool designed to deliver topographic maps easier, faster and less expensively than before. Using open source software and the Google Maps programming interface, the Map Locator and Downloader allows customers to find the topographic maps they need, by searching zip code, address, or navigating on an interactive map. Users can pan, zoom, change the map to see satellite imagery or a seamless USGS topographic map view, order printed maps or download a scanned map image in GeoPDF format.
SF Event Takes Kiteboarding to Mainstream
Entertainment and the St. Francis Yacht Club, took over the shores of San Francisco from July 25 through the 29 in front of thousands of spectators and kiteboarding enthusiasts. The event kicked off July 25 with the first ever Wells Fargo US Nationals Kite Course Championship. Organized by the St. Francis Yacht Club, over 60 of the top professional kiteboarders from around the world came to test their skills against the experienced local racers.
MTB Championships Roll Into California
The Golden State has long been a hotbed for mountain bike racing, with ideal conditions for year-round training, endless trails, countless multi-discipline competitions and a line-up of homegrown talent that has brought home World Championships, World Cup Championships and National Championships in droves. One crown that has eluded California's professional racers since its inception five years ago is that of World Professional Champion, resulting from mastery of the Jeep® King of the Mountain Series.
