Filed in archive Adventure on April 20, 2007
For most, conquering the 29,035 foot mount everest is a once in a lifetime event. But, for Appa, once, twice, even sixteen times is not enough.
In an unbelievable feat, veteran sherpa, Appa is trying for his record 17th climb of Everest. For obviously reasons, Appa is one of the most respected mountain climbers in the world. Since 1989, he's been climbing Everest at least once a year. Currently, he holds the record at 16, with the second closest sherpa at 14.
Scaling Mount Everest is dangerous, even life threatening. Since 1953, over 200 people have died attempting to climb it. But that doesn't stop the hundreds of people who attempt it or at least dream about it every year. But, don't worry about Appa, he's in good company. He'll be leading a group of sherpas called the Super Sherpas, whose combined number of scales on Everest is an astounding 46.

Malcolm Campbell, book reviewer
Conflict and dialog keep this gripping story of destiny, romance and adventure moving from the first page to the last paragraph. LeBlanc has a genius for bonding her readers and her characters. I found I was empathizing in turn with each character as they faced their own personal crisis or trauma.

This is the book to read before you embark on your pilgrimage to Nepal. The author knows and loves the people and the country, and makes you feel the cold thin air, the hard rocks of the mountains, the tough life of the Sherpa guides, and you learn to love them too. This is a higly literate, but also very readable book. Highly recommended."
