The Outdoor Enthusiast Next Door: Dave Lee (Part Two)

How did you prepare for this trip/adventure?
Besides reading a guide book on belize
, I bought some insect repellent and sunscreen. What influenced you to take this trip?
I traveled to Costa Rica the year before, and really enjoyed my time in the tropical environment, both the beaches and jungles. Belize offered the draw of world class diving and snorkeling (though I only did the latter), as well as opportunities to spend time in the jungle.
How did this trip change you as a person?
Spending a night alone in a bunkhouse at the jungle lodge was a frightening experience. The combination of no electricity, howler monkeys above, animals eating right outside the screen windows, and the potential for tarantula and deadly fer-de-lance snake encounters was enough to have me sweating heavy under my covers. I survived the night, and came out a stronger person as a result.
What's your next adventure? Where and why?
In early December, I will be departing on a trip around the world. It will be the culmination of five and a half years of saving and planning. My first stop will be New Zealand and Australia, followed by a month in Thailand, and a 3-week trek in Nepal. Then it is on to China, SE Asia, India, Africa, Europe, and South America. I hope to wrap my trip up an exploration of the Pacific coast and Rockies in North America. I came up with the idea after being let go from my last job. I realized I needed to take my life by the reigns and be in more control of the direction I am heading. I am happiest on the road, so why not give myself as much time as possible to enjoy it!
Name three items/gadgets essential to the outdoor lover and why.
I just bought a Casio Pathfinder watch which includes a digital compass, altimeter, barometer, thermometer, solar power, and atomic timekeeping. It seems a little over the top, however I am excited to track my altitude on climbs in places like Nepal and Peru. Plus, a compass can come in handy when navigating new cities. A digital camera is essential for capturing epic scenery and sunsets. Who will know you stood at the edge of 300-foot cliffs in Ireland unless you snap a photo. Lastly, I learned my flashlight was ancient technology last year when I woke up in the pre-dawn hours to hike atop Temple IV in Tikal, Guatemala for the sunrise. Everyone else had LED headlamps which were hands-free, and much more powerful. I intend to get one before leaving on my world travels.
Thanks Dave!
