This Week in Outdoor History: Great Barrier Reef and the 2007 Everest Award Winners

Apart from the record breaking summits on Everest last week, not much happened this month in outdoor history. However, I would like to highlight the winners of the 2007 Everest Awards, also known as the "Oscars of the Outdoor Industry" – who, no doubt, will probably make history in their respected areas of expertise – followed by a significant bits of outdoor history.

Male Trail Runner of the Year: Karl Meltzer

Female Trail Runner of the Year: Darcy Africa

Male Mountain Biker of the Year: Chris Eatough

Female Mountain Biker of the Year: Pua Sawicki

Female Paddler of the Year: Tanya Faux

Male Paddler of the Year: Eric Jackson

Male Climber of the Year: Chris Sharma

Female Climber of the Year: angie Payne

Male Multi-Sport Athlete of the Year: Michael Tobin

Female Multi-Sport of the Year: Melanie McQuaid

Expedition of the Year: Tie between Chris Davenport – Ski the 14ers (skied Colorado's 54 tallest peaks in one season) and Kit Deslauriers -Seven Summits (first person to ski from the peaks of the 7 summits)

June 11, 1770: Capt. James Cook discovered the Great Barrier Reef off Australia.

June 17, 1885: The Statue of Liberty arrived in New York City aboard the French ship Isere.
