White water adventure can lead to parasite disease

If you are a white water adventure freak you must read this piece of information. Adventure freaks who go for rafting in foreign countries might feel that they are safe from parasite diseases but an outbreak of parasite disease in Uganda has proved it wrong. The country has witnessed an outbreak of Bilharzia.
Some rafting operators stated that the chances of contracting diseases was less in fast moving white water but on the contrary researchers found it to be wrong. Even though there is a medicine which can prevent this disease but it was found out that travelers were taking it quite early so it was not working. Travelers need not take the medication early rather they should wait for at least four to six weeks to improve chances of recovery. The timing of the medication is important for travelers who have not been exposed to worms on an earlier occasion. At the end of the day, it would be better to seek prevention advice from your own country before finalizing your travel plan.

Thanks for bringing this up. I always have to stop when I see people intake water all day long on the river by accident and then treat their drinking water at camp. They don’t stop to think that they drank the water when the water splashed in their face.
