The city of Reno, Nevada is cracking down on overnight camping on public property along the Truckee River with a new ordinance. City and county police have conducted sweeps for homeless camps along the river for years, and once approved the ordinance allows Reno police to cite campers for a misdemeanor after giving them notice of a pending sweep and listing available services.

The ordinance allows people to keep their sleeping bags or camping gear with them during the day in public areas along the river, but forbids them from setting up camp at night. The public areas subject to the ordinance include parks along the river, open areas along the Truckee River bikeway and land up to the high-water mark on the river bank. The primary intent of the ordinance is to protect the river from being fouled, according to the city.
